Brett McKay over at Dynadot published a piece on the advantages of a short tld. He lists 5 advantages,
1. Memorability
2. Accessibility
3. Advertising
4. Domain Hacks
5. Dual Meaning
None of the points Brett makes are wrong. But do younger investors and Internet users care as much about the length?
In a post I published on TheDomains.com, I look at .io and .co not faring as well as say an extension like .xyz in 2022 through the first half.
I do think sometimes people forget about the two way functionality of certain cctlds. Extensions like .ai, .io, .co, .tv do have the ability to be much more than just representing a country.
I would say domain hacks are probably the strongest advantage if you want to get cute in your marketing.
Thanks to Brett for bringing up a topic not talked about as much with the focus more on blockchain, .ens and Web3.
Everyone should bother about shorter TLDs, not just new investors or internet users. A large percentage of internet users access via mobile devices, which leads to demand of shorter domains.
Also, most domain sales and new brands seem to be below 8 letters (80%+), which when combined w/ a shorter tld leads to a shorter url, thus increasing usage.
