One of the bigger stories over the past month was Jack Dorsey, changing the name of Square to Block.
In a complaint filed in Kansas City, Missouri, federal court, however, H&R Block accused the company of “stealing Block’s name in order to co-opt the reputation and goodwill that Block has earned through decades of hard work.”
H&R Block said consumers were likely to be confused by the similar name, noting that it has referred to itself simply as “Block” in some advertisements since 2015.
These are certainly two well funded enterprises and it will be interesting to see what comes of this. Block using Block.xyz gave the .xyz extension another added boost as proponents of the extensions said “See we told you so, more companies will adopt .xyz.
This is nonsense…
Everyone knows that the name “Block” was chosen because of “blockchain technology” and nothing to do with HR Block or Taxes. The goods and services are also distinct.
I’m not fond of Jack Dorsey, but in this case, I think H&R Block is doing something wrong and unreasonable by suing a company of a different industry. Their lawsuit would make sense if Block were in the same industry.
