GoDaddy will be taking over for Verisign in managing the .tv registry. The Ministry of Justice, Communication and Foreign Affairs, Tuvalu Government posted on Facebook:
The Ministry is excited to announce that the Government of Tuvalu has selected GoDaddy Registry as the new registry service provider for Tuvalu’s .tv Country Code Top-Level Domain! The Government, through the Ministry, will work with GoDaddy to grow the .tv domain and provide opportunities both locally and globally for economic development and capacity building! The Ministry thanks the Programme Management Unit within the Ministry’s ICT Department for the tireless effort they have put into their work to develop .tv! GoDaddy.
It’s funny GoDaddy once told people not to buy .tv domain names because the island was sinking. The Huffington Post covered it back in 2009.
Last month I wrote about an article at TheRegister.com about who would run the registry? The relationship with Verisign had soured and they did not even compete on the new bid.
Best of luck to both parties, hopefully we see some positive developments.
That’s too funny. I guess now they want people to register dot TVs.
GoDaddy is forwarding GoDaddy.tv to the same page they are forwarding GoDaddyVideos.com. I think a number of companies have different presentations at the .com and .tv domains.
I’ll bet if someone ran a marketing test, advertising the same website using the .com domain in one ad and the .tv in another, the .tv ad would generate a better response – because, of course, when people see a .tv advertised it tells them there’s video on the website.
If that’s true and could be proven, it would be a game changer for .tv.
It could be a game changer Jon, if GoDaddy promotes .tv it could be a big boost for the extension.
It remains to be seen what GoDaddy will do, including lower or raise the registration/renewal fees of nonpremium, premium and “legacy premium” .tv domains. I’m guessing Raymond has already reached out to them for comment.
This should be fun. They can catapult .tv to the top of their suggested tlds when the .com taken.
