Wash your hands is something everyone should have been doing long before the Covid-19 pandemic. But now the call to action is everywhere and the domain name registered in 1998 has sold for $17,500 on Sedo.

The domain name was owned for many years by an organization called Learning Plus.

Ownership not updated yet, parked page.

    Hi Ray!

Timely post as well, for me at least…

[disclaimer: I’m half way through this post, realize I may be ranting a bit. I’m not sure how much I will edit to help shorten the comment. Just glad to be here, as it’s nice to have an outlet during these quarantined times.]

I initially came to your blog today, to re-read a blog comment that I’ve been considering responding to. I rather not say which one. As I was (thankfully) distracted by this post, and thinking back to something you’ve said many times before, “Is the juice worth the squeeze?” Thank you for mentioning that phrase as many times as you have.

To elaborate, that phrase that has helped me a lot with my inner-personal debate/struggle to balance certain situations such as when to make lemonade, and/or when to question if the juice worth the squeeze. Maybe you heard that phrase from somebody else, and have continually been providing pseudo public service announcements throughout the year, or maybe its a phrase you came to on your own, whatever it may be, I just want to emphasize a big thank you for continually mentioning that phrase, as for me, it can help put things in a more clear perspective, and/or re-evaluating, from more of a macro view.

In just a quick search, I found three mentioning of, “Is the juice worth the squeeze” dating back to as early as 2014. I’m sure you’ve mentioned this phrase many times more, and likely earlier than 2014.

    http://dotwhatever.com/donuts-domains-numbers/ (2014)

    https://www.thedomains.com/2018/02/23/sometimes-might-better-just-sell/

    https://www.thedomains.com/2020/01/01/do-you-still-want-to-be-a-domainer/

With everything going on right now, and seemingly a global side effect of raised anxiety amongst many other issues, I guess this might apply to a lot of people right now as well, as for me, I find myself questioning a lot of things within my life, partly wondering where to squeeze, to get the juice I need, and/or am looking for., and is it worth it

One area in particular, is how can I be of service. Recognizing my strengths, while understanding my limitations, and trying to balance that with my priorities; all of which seem quite convoluted right now.

I’m probably in a position where (a) I shouldn’t be buying more domains right now and (b) shouldn’t be declining $100 offers as I am. Still, as a domainer, there are nights I lay in bed at night, my mind stimulated over debating whether to register/buy a particular domain, one that expired or is expiring, maybe finding myself short of funds, even going as far to wondering if I should grace delete some recent domains (why does Dynadot charge a $3 fee?), to help fund a new domain purchase. I think it’s important to realize we all have different income levels/streams, participate in the industry in different ways, some more effective in certain areas, and all of us live different lives, with different experiences, and different perspectives, to bring to the table.

The latest domain on my mind, that I had contemplated registering for a few days, was WaveYourHands.com. Which is the reason why I’m commenting here, as I figure other call to action domains ending in ****YourHands.com may be considered related, or on topic?

Last night, I went on the BrandBucket slack channel, and noticed some really good domains going for $5 each, pretty quickly. Simply put, I wanted to register WaveYourHands.com more than I wanted to own some 5L pattern domains, that have somewhat of a liquid value due to (a) remaining registration time (b) whatever value being BrandBucket published brings, which does include a logo, description, and access to their marketplace. So I posted (5) 5 letter brandbucket domains all expiring in November/December at a bulk price of $40, that sold within 15 minutes, and completed payment/domain(s) sent/received within 30 minutes. While it’s not recommended if you don’t trust the seller, as the seller in this instance, I appreciated being paid friends and family. After receiving some domain funds, the first thing I did was add WaveYourHands.com to my cart, looked to see if there were any other domains on my list I was wanting to register, to help the registrar with payment processing fee’s by adding multiple domains to this receipt, opposed to multiple singular domain receipts within a short time, yet found the only domain I was really wanting to register was WaveYourHands.com.

In the days between registering WaveYourHands.com, and wanting to register it, I asked myself several times, “Why do I really want to register this domain? Over the many other areas my funds should likely be directed toward now, why do I need to register it? Why hasn’t anybody else registered it in the time it has been expired (about 10 days)?

My answer relates to a similar question I’m struggling with, as it stemmed from a discussion I had / am in the process of having with my therapist, “Why is my opinion important? Or why does my opinion matter? Why does any opinion matter? And what makes one persons opinion more important than somebody elses?” This had personally boiled over when I didn’t understand why or what Rush Limbaugh did to warrant receiving the Presidential Medal of Freedom (I had/have a hard time processing that), and was later complicated hearing President Trump downplay COVID19 early on. Now, I don’t mean to get political here, and that could have strategically been said/done to help mitigate/prepare a response, and don’t wish to further speculate, I’m simply coming from somebody with anxiety, trying to understand what advice to listen to, and from whom is the most important. I noticed a similar occurrence is/was seemingly occurring at nP around that time, to which I very much welcome the new point based comment review system that was recently implemented.

Putting a long, likely incoherent rant aside, I am the current registrant of WaveYourHands.com. I have anxiety, and other issues, where I stray away from hugs/handshakes, and typically try to smile 😃 and/or give the hang lose 🤙 symbol. Now though, with evidence based fears to human contact, and an emphasis on social distancing, I cringe when I see people handshake, in real life, or on TV

I see this $17,500 sale, and (a) think wow, a $XX,XXX sale would change mine the lives around me immensely, and (b) I wonder how will the domain be used, and by whom?

Addressing point (a) while I very much welcome a life changing sale, I didn’t register WaveYourHands.com with the thoughts to try and entice a life changing sale. I have other domains that I reserve those hopes for. Also recognizing many lives are being affected right now, and a $XX,XXX is just that, a $XX,XXX that stops there. No longer within my control, and hopes the new owner will use it to change the lives of many others.

I feel, a well designed call to action campaign pushing a social/cultural change away from hand shakes, and more towards something contact-less, maybe something already widely accepted as a Hello, such as a wave, would be a welcomed, and possibly for some, a life changing cultural norm.

With such big ideas, so little resources, and having to operate within my limitation, minus the thought of outbounding to more capable organizations to pass the torch to a better owner (somebody able and willing to develop for the good), I raise the question if/how can a domain / website, be open sourced collectively for a greater good?

Alternatively, other extensions such as the .org, are available for others to register, and take lead with their own ideas.

Or, I could very well be overthinking this, and the domain could be worthless and/or not worth anybody’s time to develop.

But, if there are any developers, or folks who know how to put this domain into positive action, I welcome anyone to reach out by replying here or to the WHOIS of WaveYourHands.com. I’ll be the first to admit, I’m likely not the best fit to be in charge. If there is interest, or a way to band together, domainers + developers + others who want to help, maybe we can boot strap WaveYourHands push a digital ad campaign pushing waving over handshakes/high fives, at least for the time being, and until things can go back to normal again. As for me, everything starting to feel like a bad dream. I’d really like to wake up tomorrow, and think, “Wow, what a dream. I think I should get my head looked at.” Sadly, I’ve had that thought many days, and still turn on the news to the same reality. As this comment existing in the years to come, among many other examples, will be proof that the current reality is just that, real, and not a messed up dream. Stay safe everyone!

I get where you are coming from with WaveYourHands.com I think many new customs might come to play once we get to a bettter, safer time for everyone.

My little sister is very germaphobic, anxious and I said to her this is the time for new ideas that change how people interact for decades.

Thanks for the comment and all the best dealing with the anxiety it’s something I have known all my life and have dealt with in unique ways.

I like wave your hands, I am not prepared at this time to give ideas a little past 9pm here and I am tired. It has possibilities Chris.
