In an ever changing namespace Verisign wants people to know there are still plenty of .com domains available and has put together an infographic. They have put out a couple in 2014 since the new gtlds became available.
Some of the data in the graphic is from 2012 – 2013, keyword research and certain registration data. It is still a nice snapshot of the .com namespace and worth bookmarking for some quick references.
It’s true. If you are not too picky, it’s still possible to find a short .com name for your new business today. Few months ago I registered a 7-letter .com name for my business. You just need to spend some time to think and search. The ripple effect I learned from property investment applies here too. When people are buying properties in the center of a city and so their prices rise, you can go to the city fringe and buy similar properties at a much lower prices. In other words, when you can’t afford one-word generics, you can go for one-word created names. Just make sure the name is easy for consumers to remember.
95% of 5 letter domains may be available but 95% of pronounceable 5 letter domains are taken.
There are only 265,722 possible pronounceable 5 letter domains out of almost 12 million combinations.
