Domain Investing Stats and Tips

Domaining through the eyes or results of Google

October 20, 2012 by Raymond Hackney

By: RH

With all this talk about EMD updates and everything else Google does and wants from website owners, I wanted to take a look at how the domaining industry is seen through the eyes of Google.

If we take websites and see where they rank in Google the results are all over the place. In taking a look at the Domain blog space for example.

I wanted to look at the following keywords:

Domain Names

Domain News

Domain Name News

Domaining

Domain Blogs

Domains

Domain Sales

DomainNameWire.com ranks the highest when using the keyword Domain Names, it is listed on page 4 when I do a search and using this tool, comes in at position 28.

When using the keyword Domaining, DNW is not in the top 300 results with sites that have not been updated in some time ranking higher. This makes no sense to me as DNW is certainly a quality blog and should rank higher than a site not updated for a year or two. Now there may be some aspect of EMD playing itself out with some results, for example PredictiveDomaining.com is on the second page of Google ranking spot around 14 for the keyword Domaining.  This is a good blog but has not been updated since April of 2011 versus a blog updated daily. ElliotsBlog.com is result number 134. MorganLinton.com has the number 16 result and DomainShane.com has result number 58. The number two spot for the keyword domaining is the website domaining.in. Which is a free directory. The site displays on its home page, Page Rank 5,Alexa Rank 29,000,More than 2900 Visitors daily,8,861,000 Backlinks and 50 Edu-Backlinks.

Take the keyword Domain Blogs,DNW comes in at result 131, thedomains.com is not even in the top 300 results which is as far as the tool goes. Ricksblog.com comes in result number 4, domaining.com number 5 and Elliotsblog.com comes in number 6. Hybrid Domainer comes in at result number 76 there is no way we should be ahead of DNW and TheDomains, that is not self deprecating, I am proud of the effort here but we have not been around as long or written as much quality content.

When you take a keyword like Domains, none of the bloggers rank for that keyword in the top 300 results. That keyword is dominated by registrars and hosting companies.

The Domain News and Domain Name News space see high results for bloggers like Doman Name Wire, Elliots Blog and Domain Name News all reach the prized first page.

The keyword Domain Sales shows DNW on page 2 with the number 12 result, DN Forum.com actually is in the number 10 result. DomainSherpa.com has result number 33, Morgan Linton has result number 43 and Domain Shane result number 92 with Elliots Blog at result number 95 and TheDomains is at result number 108.

Of course the amount of SEO that each blogger puts into their site has some effect on results and certain posts just rank ,but some of this just seems not to make much sense. When you do a search for Domain News or Domaining and see which sites rank before some of the most popular and widely read blogs in the industry, its a little odd.

Again if you would like to play around with this tool check it out here

Another tool

Of course results will differ if you search from other countries or leave personal results on. All searches that were manually done were done with personal results off and not logged in.

Again all this analysis is coming from someone who is not an SEO expert, if any should read this please leave a comment.

This just shows me Google is whacked… How can thedomains not rank first page for all those keywords ? Best blog on domaining far better than DNW.

I will agree with you Kiki on DNW never understood the hype there, the article yesterday showed he is either lost or needs link bait.
Ricks blog is by far the best, he could not give the award to himself so he gave it to someone who was in the business a day and called himself an authority, domain sherpa is not in my top 10.

Can someone explain this? According to MajesticSEO dommaining.in gets a backlink from yswv.org and also from 9ug.com – but when you type them into the address bar, they both redirect to domaining.in – a sneaky way of getting backlinks but how is it done ? And why does G not ignore them?

Well, the irony is since googles EMD it appears that google negativly ranks your if you have your own keyword in the domain. For example my blog interneteur.net does not rank for it’s own keyword anymore. Instead the whois ranks.
