There is a new burger joint opening in my city that has spent a lot of money on getting a good location and a lot on advertising. I was getting a hair cut a few weeks back and my barber commented that he did not see the need for another burger joint.
The new burger joint had actually purchased the land that comprised six shops and one of them was the old place where the barber worked. We discussed that there was McDonalds who is the .com of the burger world, Wendy's, Five Guys and several smaller places in the area. We mentioned how Fat Burger did not last long in their location and left.
The new place feels it has something new and unique and they don't need McDonald's volume to be successful. They see an oppportunity and are taking it.
This made me think of the new tlds, of course .com is everywhere just like McDonalds. There are other extensions that for the most part failed to catch on like the Fat Burger in my city. Examples would include .name, .tel, .travel.
These new extensions that are realistic are like the new burger joint, they don't have to sell .com volume to be successful. They know many don't want them but they see an opportunity and believe they see something that most others don't. Frank Schilling is a smart man imo, he sees something with a .tattoo for example. Someone sees opportunity in .xyz, etc…..
The same way as a new burger joint will sell enough burgers to stay in business or they will close their doors. These new tld registries will have to find their niche and get someone to buy their gourmet burger. I think someone will always be looking to try to sell their gourmet burger, the question is will domainers and end users have the appetite ?
I like the premise behind this post. Cheers
