One cost that has balloned the cost of SEO is the cost for new unique content to keep websites fresh and to have content that is appealling to users (ie they stick on your site for more than 1 min to read it) and that is not duplicated elsewhere on the net.
In the old days, SEO was more about building backlinks and metatags. Today SEO is about building user experience.
Pretty crazy study, first hand I can tell you if you are spending more than $75 per hour you are most likely getting ripped off. @ 75 per hour you should be getting daily content, agressive link strategy and full time support, the only coveat would be some verticals simply are too tough to compete in for seo right now, take the guys who tried to build out mortgage.org as a prime example.
I was talking to a friend the other day who is in the oil & gas industry and disclosed that his company spent about 100k this year on SEO. I was a little blown away. Apparently whatever sector he is in is hyper-competitive, to the extent that they found competing companies were engaged in slimy tactics to try to tar their reputation, like creating sites to post fake reviews and then running their own ads on them. So for them it sounded mostly about reputation management and keeping the legit stuff on top of the SERPs
$76 – $200 per hour is a big deal for ROI.
100 thousand per year on SEO? Gosh I would love to find a client that could afford that. I am definitely going to use this study when I explain to customers how SEO is priced.
