DomainName.com owner Yinan Wang adds Link.com to his portfolio

April 5, 2019 by Raymond Hackney

My friend Yinan Wang of DomainName.com and DomainNames.com fame, confirmed with me he has purchased Link.com from L3 Technologies, Inc. I noticed a whois change and he confirmed it. The domain name was created in 1989  and was being used by L3T for their services since then. The domain had never been listed for sale in past 30 years.

I was told there was a strict NDA signed between L3 Technologies, Yinan and the broker Joe Uddeme.

L3 has just completed a $33.5 billion merger agreement with Harris Corp.

L3 also did business with another familiar name in the domain space as they sold Storm.com to Brent Oxley.

Congrats to Yinan on what is surely a 7 figure domain.

    Incredible domain name, Congrats Yinan!

After reading this, I thought I remembered a cryptocurrency I had seen on Coin Market Top 100 and there it is. $LINK = Chainlink

They have a horrible domain name for their website now – Chain.link
I would think these guys would be the #1 End User

They are ranked #42 of all CryptoCurrencies w/a Market Cap of 192 Billion.

This awesome domain name will end up with these chain dot link guys if they want to be taken more seriously,

I give it til the end of this year and we will see this move to take that crypto company on to the next level.

    Awesome domain name.

        You’re right Supratik..
        My bad.
        $192 Million, not Billion.

That is a real bad name they have.

Realistically though they will probably be out of businesss in a couple of years given that industry so it is probably not worthwhile spending a lot on a name.

Yeah, I agree. There will be a lot of Crypto companies gone as quickly as they came on the scene. It still amazes me these Companies who have nothing built at all, and yet still have Market Caps in the hundreds of millions.

If a Crypto Co. is in it for the long haul though, they really should spend the money on the absolute best domain name possible to instill trust and authority in their future though, especially since they DO have the funds to support their future.

Thank you for the info, Vito. Much appreciated.
We’ll see how it goes in the long run.

It’s just your own opinion to think their domain name is horrible.

As a domainer who advocates clearer and shorter domain names, I think their domain name Chain.link is a good, clear domain hack for their brand name Chainlink.

When making a criticism, it is important to add that it’s your opinion so that you retain your professionalism and reduce the displeasure caused to the minimum.

        You are right Ethan,

What I stated of course is just my opinion. I do not own any dot link domain names and I am sure there will be a few domainers out there who will make money on that TLD if they study that market closely and buy wisely. I mean no “displeasure” or offense to you or your portfolio.

I have invested in domains outside of dot com too and have made money in them, so I truly get it. Unfortunately those are always more risky and costlier to hold so its not as easy as I am sure you have heard a million times.

When we are talking a financial company who are trusting people to invest in them, I do honestly believe that their investment in the best of the best domain name will translate into additional trust and authority which translates into more investors and ultimately more value in their Company/Coin.

My opinions are sometimes strong because they are based on my own personal successes and failures in domaining for 12 years now.

I do wish you the best in your domaining.

Congratulations Yinan on a very impressive acquisition! It’s certainly possible to make seven figures with this incredible name.

Sorry, why is it surely a million dollar name? I think that’s quite a high price for a domainer. It’s an amazing name, no doubt about that, but I scratch my head when I read statements like ‘surely worth $1m’. If it is, why wasn’t everyone all over it? Why would investors with the money have turned the opportunity down? It was a big gamble and I hope it works out for Yinan. Ballsy buy.

I believe Ray didn’t mean that I acquired it for 7 fugures. He means it could be worth 7 figures to the right buyer. Based on my own experiences, I’m very confident that this is a 2m+ domain name. We’ll see.

What are you talking about? The article did not say Yinan paid $1million. I understand it that the name was not for sale it was owned by L3 no?

    • Andy says

      April 5, 2019 at 4:59 pm

I read the article. I know what he paid for it. Just the author’s claims that ‘it’s surely worth a million’ is what I am responding to. My point was, , it wasn’t a steal. It was a roll of the dice, and wouldn’t likely be liquid to the reseller market at that price.

If that name is not a seven figure name to an end user then I guess all the bullshit you people talk about short one word dot coms is a real crock of shit.

Andy, I totally agree with you that “it wasn’t a steal. It was a roll of the dice”. I could eventually be the end user as well. Actually I have been after this domain name for a very long time, but it was not for sale. Gladly I got the opportunity to be the new owner. 🙂
