Domain Investing Stats and Tips

It ain’t your booty, it’s your beauty

April 6, 2017 by Raymond Hackney

The story of BootyBeauty.com

How does that headline end up on a domain investment blog ? Well that line in that movie (Friday After Next) led to a joke, that led to an idea for a T-shirt website, that resulted in a domain registration. That has now resulted in a domain sale.

Back in 2003 I kept talking about wanting to start a t-shirt line and website, I was watching the movie Friday After Next with a girl I knew, and after Mike Epps said:

I said to her I think that is a great word combo, and she was like what are you talking about ? I said “Booty Beauty” I think it is a catchy name and its a bit fun to say. So then I thought some people might reverse them, I had been out when someone was trying to be funny and using the line, “It ain’t your booty, it’s your beauty” and instead said “It ain’t your beauty, it’s your booty.” So I regged BeautyBooty.com as well.

So in August of 2003 I got a phone call and it was someone from Hearst Corporation, the publisher of Cosmopolitan Magazine. The lady explained that they do a promo every year entitled Cosmo Beauty Booty, they owned the domain cosmobeautybooty.com. The problem was their publisher printed all their magazine ads and other promotional material with the domain beautybooty.com.

She told me they wanted the domain for a month, then quickly asked “This name has not been used for pornography has it ?”

I said no the name has been regged for a t-shirt line and she said ok, she then asked me what I wanted for the one month rental ?

I was on another line when she called and did not give it much thought, not as much as I should have, this was Cosmo not some small regional magazine.

I said $1,000 and free advertising for Booty Beauty when it launches. She told me if you mean on our website ok, I can’t give you print advertising in our magazine.

I said ok sure, the website is fine. I got an email with the details and forwarded the domain in October, here is a screenshot from archive.org:

beautybooty

Over the years the name got offers but only low balls. At one time I owned BootyBeauty.net and Booty-Beauty.com. I eventually dropped those names and they got registered.

People started developing around the name, TheBootyBeauty.com, my previous name Booty-Beauty.com got developed, BootyBeauty.net.

The .com.au is a developed website and BrazaBra named one of their products booty beauty.

Holding on to the thought that I would still launch Booty Beauty as a t-shirt brand, I had different logo and branding concepts drawn up, some very good, some not so good.

Development takes time, and I had to be honest with myself that while I can envision the brand, I am never going to get around to it.

Over the first quarter of 2017 the offers started coming back for the domain name. I had it parked on Voodoo for years while registered at MyDomain.com. I transferred the domain to GoDaddy figuring that would be more conducive for a potential buyer.

So after 8 offers and nothing more than $300 in Q1 2017, I finally had one buyer who I had quoted $3,000 come back to me after no communication for three weeks. They asked if I would meet them in the middle at $1,500 ?

I figured since it was one of my favorite names that I had a lot of history with, I was going to at least set the price and not agree to their price. So I had moved the domain to Sedo and set a buy it now of $1,888. The buyer agreed and the name sold this week.

I got to the point where I just wanted to sell the name and stop the mental distraction of “hey you could still launch this brand.”

I still do own BeautyBooty.com so maybe the distraction will continue.

We just have to say that to ourselves sometimes. No time for that development idea. I think I will take the money and run.

Cool story, congrats on a nice sale!

Booties.com is worth more than booty.com in the bigger picture.
I would like Booties and not one lame booty.

Cool to hear the story. Renters and offers and buyers – all signing their names in the guest book of 1 good domain name over the years.
