Domain Investing Stats and Tips

Sold My First New gTLD

March 4, 2015 by Raymond Hackney

It is not something to shout from a mountain top or any huge deal, but I did complete my first new gtld sale. I have not gone wild with new gtld purchases, I have just registered 10 in total, and was trying to focus on topics that I actually like so if there was zero interest, maybe I could develop them into something so it would not be a total waste.

The two extensions that I have liked that are out and available are .media and .website. I think if you could find one word or incredible two word combos with those extensions that they could at least sell for something. I also did register a couple .media names to have as a package with media.coms I own that have gotten more than one offer.

Of course the one trick with finding great keyword combos is that the registry is playing the part of the domain investor and asking for much more than $10.99 to $29.99.

When I was looking at some .website domains, a name like Tennis which I used to play 12 hours a day at one time in my life, was $3,125, some other sports names from $625 to $3,125. I did not think I would find the type of premium name I was looking for at regular registration fee. Searching one night at like 4 am, not for a .website but just checking keywords I put in OnlineCasino to see if it was available with any extension that made sense, OnlineCasino.moda is completely non – sensical and worthless as a registration. I was surprised when checking that .website was available, it wasn’t before but it came off collision and was priced non premium instead of premium. I immediately hand regged the name, and parked it on Voodoo with a $888 buy it now price.

I got a $500 offer to which I just replied “No,thank you” and a week later the buyer said I will take it for the buy it now. Now I will say when I got the offer of $500, I did think maybe I have priced this too cheaply, but as online gambling is still a problem here in the states with no clarity I felt like I would rather sell the name and if the original buyer came back I was going to honor the price I had set and not raise it because I got interest. If he did not come back and there was no communication for say a month, I was going to raise it to $1,999. But I am glad to make a sale in something overall I feel is highly speculative, and they buyer has experience with online gambling so I hope he makes a success out of it.

OnlineCasino has been a keyword that has done well when it comes to sales, even in obscure cctlds. So I probably sold a little on the cheap side but I would rather get the first new gtld sale done.

    Profit is profit, good job

P.S. thank you for the disclosures I notice you always do this and we new domainers appreciate this. If only the wolves would disclose their info.

You got the better end of the sale, don’t act to greedy after the same, Ask M Berkens how many of his hundreds of GTLDS get offers.

I say this as Keyword1Keyword2.Keyword3 are very confusing to market, Keyword1.Keyword2 are a bit easier to push.

There were a few guys I think Phil was his name, he was going big into GTLDS, now he is dumping his names at cost as they were buying $100-500 renewals.

You are right, online casino have so many affiliate programs, they always find a buyer in such a set range, I doubt you would have got over $1K, but good on you.

It’s nice to see a sale in the new GTLDs that can be trusted actually took place. It would be great if others with a great reputation like yourself would come forward and announce these sales to the domaining community.

Maybe start a weekly post solely about GTLD sales and see if others will come forward and start announcing theirs.

There are not enough public sales happening, that I think this would be feasible, the drops need to happen, and names need to be redeemed, and find a solid base before you get here.

Good sale, always good to liquidate to keep other investments coming in.

I took a similar approach to yourself by only registering names that of interest to me. Also like yourself I have only made 1 sale but only own 5 altogether.

    Betting.exchange – $6,000

    • Travis says

      March 4, 2015 at 2:06 pm

Steven, you failed to inform the seller of the $2xx annual fee, I dont think they were none to pleased after the fact.

        March 4, 2015 at 2:37 pm

Do you know the buyer to make this claim?

        • Travis says

          March 4, 2015 at 2:45 pm

          Candy, of course, do you?

They own some quality domains, including a large sale not disclosed in the betting space albeit a .com that was done in late 2014 from a well know domain investor.

          Anymore questions Candy

Like I said they were none to pleased about not being told the renewal fee. I guess whatever it takes to make a sale.

          • Steven Hartley says

            March 4, 2015 at 2:57 pm

How much did the buyer think the renewal was going to be in the first place?

Why is it my job to inform people over the renewal price? aren’t these the questions you ask in negotiations.

Really nice sale imo Ray, can’t beat flipping like that with some nice ROI.

  9. Candy says

    March 4, 2015 at 2:55 pm

No I don’t have any other questions I was just curious and wanted to know how you knew that the buyer was pissed off ? if you know the buyer well then that’s great now I know. it’s not cool when premium renewals are not discussed to the buyer.

Working on a 9k opening offer at the moment for a $10 gtld. Who makes an opening offer of $9000…I sure as he’ll haven’t had one before!! Buyer seems legit after 3emails, it is THE enduser, so hopefully all works out well, would pay for my renewals for 3yrs, or allow me to upgrade a lot…I’m only a year into the game and biggest sale so far is 4k on a handreg .com. Problem is the gtld is under registry lock until end march, very annoying. And being with go daddy, it looks like I can’t even sell it on that platform. Would appreciate any help…thanks.

I didn’t even know what “.moda” means. Just looked it up and its supposed to be for fashion, which I would think would be better at simply “.mod”

I’m looking to sell a couple domains that we picked up for a project but have decided not to use. Never sold a domain previously and was curious how to go about pricing the new gtlds. We are looking to sell quickbusiness.loans as well as startupbusiness.loans?

    Any insights?

Good read, nice to hear about some new gTLD sales.

I made 3 purchases. Looking into the future as these domains will take years till they are worth anything.

    Limitless.solar
    Nanobot.tech
    Bionic.software

As you could guess I’m a tech geek.
