Michael Berkens Taking A Risk We Rarely See in a Domain Auction

January 12, 2015 by Raymond Hackney

Domain - what domain name to choose

Whenever there is a solid, valuable, generic .com in an auction, it usually comes with a big reserve. Chances are more than likely that the seller paid a lot more than reg fee and cannot risk a poor showing at an auction.

Michael Berkens purchased SexEducation.com for $120,000 back in October of 2006 at T.R.A.F.F.I.C. He has decided to put SexEducation.com at no reserve for the auction at NamesCon.

Michael does have the luxury of coming off a big sale with 345.com going for $800,000, so he could use the loss to soften the tax blow on 345.com. It is still odd to see a name of this quality being a no reserve auction.

The name is currently at $7,250 with 4 bids. What do you think the name closes at ?

As long as it stays clean I would say $25-30K

High risk. I think it will end below 60k.

Its a good tax writeoff against other sales in 2015, win some/lose some, 30k tops is my guess

Don’t really see the risk, it is worth a lot less than the price it sold for in 2006. He’s almost certainly selling it because he can at least save some tax. Smart move to sell off the underperformers in my view.

$120,000 for this name puts it in the top 550 sales of all time but this is not a top 550 sale name. Names like Photographer.com, Homerun.com, Made.com, Migraine.com and many more sold for around the same price.

    Will barely break $25,000.

I’m guessing 87,900 because it’s getting some press

Yes, definitely overpaid at $120K imo. Not much commercial value to the name… there are plenty of sites out there that offer free sex education.

I think MHB has changed since 2006. I don’t think he would pay more than $10K for it today.

It won’t go for more than $22,000 at auction. I personally would not pay over $5K for it.

Berkens tremendously over-paid for the name in ’06. In my opinion it’s not even worth $30k. It’s a $10K – $15k domain , at best. I don’t see how the domain can be monetized. I thought Berkens was a smart man. He’ll be lucky if it fetches $10K.
