There is a new app that has been getting a lot of press this past week, it is a social video sharing app along the lines of Vine. The name of the app is Ocho which has caught the attention of entrepreneur and Dallas Mavericks owner Mark Cuban.
Like Vine, Ocho also operates on a .Co. Now I remember when .co came out ocho was one of the names I was interested in registering, I owned ocho.biz (yes I know .biz what were you thinking ?) many, many years ago as I just always liked the name and the number eight is my favorite number.
I saw the name was taken and then later found out it was registered by Nadia Pessoa of Domain Sushi. When the talk of Ocho happened this week I tweeted Nadia to make sure I was remembering right, she did own the name and sold it for $1,200 last year on Sedo. She told me that Ocho was a pre-registration and that the sale cleared the way to renew her .co portfolio.
I thought the Spanish market would flourish a little better than it has, and for awhile I owned Nueve 9 in Spanish and Diez 10 in Spanish. I got bored and dropped them and someone else registered them, I wish them success with those names. I think they make sense as it was something in .tv that worked many years ago with numbers one through ten in several popular languages.
Nadia has since added a couple excellent one word .co to her portfolio and she has the cool distinction of saying ” Ocho.co, yeah I was there first.” I think it is nice to see a name you thought would make sense for a start up actually come to fruition, Nadia is one of the truly good people in this business, so kudos to Nadia on Ocho.co.
Entrepreneur covered the Ocho launch:
May we have your attention, please: The average American attention span is now one second shorter than that of a goldfish. According to Harvard Business School historian Nancy Koehn, it’s all of eight seconds long, a sobering tidbit not lost on the creators of Ocho, a slick social video sharing app that launched today in the Apple App Store.
Videos on Ocho — as the free app’s name hints — are eight seconds long. That’s two seconds longer than a Vine loop and seven seconds shorter than the max-length Instagram clip, and that’s not by mistake.
Inspired by Koehn’s research, the app’s founders, New York City tech entrepreneurs Jourdan Urbach, 22, and Jonathan Swerdlin, 32, are betting that eight is the magic number for our digitally distracted goldfish brains. So is Ocho’s principal investor billionaire Mark Cuban, who recently backed the app along with General Assembly co-founder Matthew Brimer in a $1.7 million seed round.

That was a nice story – thanks for sharing.
I love the branding. With it being 8 seconds…ocho is perfect.
