“3 bidders at the $50,000 mark” on a sale that ended at $50,200 — just 2 bid increments above $50k?
It’s possible. But that means 2 people decided to stop bidding at basically the same point, allowing a third to outbid them. One person would have been willing to spend $50,000 but bid no further. And the next person would have been willing to spend $50,100 but bid no further. And a third willing to spend more.
$50,100 is an odd number to stop at. Just seems odd …
I thought the same Joseph, “Oh that damn extra $200, well I will not go higher” It is possible buy its very odd.
The reserve was passed well below $50k with Sponsored.com, wasn’t it? Or am I misremembering?
Basically what I’m getting at is that this auction doesn’t fit the typical shill bidding pattern — many bids going all the way up to (but not quite reaching) the reserve. I’m not suggesting that this auction was rigged. Only noting that — if it were rigged — it would be rigged in a more creative way than scams we usually see.
For clarity (and for people other than you, Raymond), I’ll say explicitly that not all auctions that appear rigged are, in fact, rigged … although many auctions are rigged across most, if not all, sales platforms. I’m insinuating nothing here about any specific auctions, sellers, bidders, or websites.
Just wondering what the bidder psychology was with this one, since it is undeniably weird.
Agreed it was “weird” that bidding ended the way it did.
My analysis was that the third highest bidder put their bid in at $50,000 (they went no higher) — so that could be seen as “I’ll bid $50k, let it ride, what will be will be.”
Second highest bidder appeared to not be available when the bidding ended. He was the high bidder when the domain passed its reserve price, and I was surprised he didn’t jump in at the end.
I appreciate the discussion, and wish to be notified should anyone have any questions of this nature in the future, for any auction.
Thanks
