Brand Bucket is by far the leader in brandable marketplaces. The company has been selling domain names since 2007, originally the names were only those owned by the owners. A little over three years ago the platform was opened to other sellers.
Ron Jackson chatted with Margot Bushnaq here.
The site lists 680 sales, and yes I went through each one, alphabetized the list and also looked for some trends. Brand Bucket does not report sales to DN Journal and they are not listed on the site. When you join you agree to an NDA on all sales made on Brand Bucket.
19 names ending in ZO like Foozo.com sold out of the 680. I had owned some names ending in zo which at the time I thought were ok, but then changed my mind and dropped a pronounceable 5 letter one and I also dropped Cloudzo.com. Seeing names like Spoonzo.com sell for four figures makes me think I should have kept the name.
Here are some other letter combinations that resulted in sales:
18 ending in ly
17 ending in io
Margot Bushnaq the founder actually commented on Namepros saying this about .io, “Names ending in -io had a burst of popularity around 2007-2009. It then
died off because it started to be seen as too “web 2.0″ and trendy.
For some reason, however, we’ve seen a resurgence not only in interest
in -io names from buyers, but in new companies launched — most likely
because of people starting to use the TLD .io as a hack when they can’t
find a suitable .com.”
10 ending in US
9 ending in mo with 27 others containing mo in the name
8 ending in XO
7 ending in sy
5 ending in oo with 25 others containing oo in the name.
Wondering about starting letter popularity ? Here is the number of sales by starting letter:
a 60
b 35
c 39
d 32
e 33
f 29
g 14
h 7
i 23
j 13
k 14
L 18
M 37
N 13
O 32
P 35
Q 8
R 18
S 62
T 36
U 12
V 43
W 18
X 7
Y 16
Z 26
The most popular letter being S, followed by A and surprisingly V. I thought N and R would have been more popular for starting letters.
Only 48 of the 680 sales were 4 letters, 5 letters came in at 136. 6 letter names seem to be one of the most popular lengths in domains sold so far on the site.
Here is the list of all the sales in alphabetical order, hope you found the data useful and best of luck.

You did this by hand ? you are nuts. Thx for this incredible post.
thanks a ton 🙂
i guess they dont mention sold price of the domain ?
Most recent sold domains with price can be found here:
http://www.brandbucket.dnbolt.com
wow all I can say is wow!!! No one produces the content you guys produced. thanks for this…

Very helpful article.
Thanks, Raymond!

Good info Ray. I was doing analysis on this also and I think one of the most important aspects is the length of the name which you touched on some. Most people here are fixated on what BrandBucket will accept but more important is what will sell if they do accept it. Bottom line the name could be accepted but may never sell based on past performance by length. Here is the complete breakdown of sales by letter length.
4 letter 48 sales
5 letter 145 sales
6 letter 198 sales
7 letter 149 sales
8 letter 92 sales
9 letter 31 sales
10 letter 8 sales
11 letter 4 sales
12 letter 4 sales
13 letter 0 sales
53% of all 4 letters listed sold
32% of all 5 letters listed sold
23% of all 6 letters listed sold
As you can see from this analysis most of the names that BrandBucket sells are made up one word style names because they are less in length. Two word names sell some but based on track record you can see that its not so often based on length since most two word names are 8 letters or longer. Also you can see from this that the shorter the name the easier it is to sell which constitutes higher prices from end users. You can also see the dramatic drop off from 7 letters to 8 letters and beyond when it comes to sales. Hope this helps some.
I posted this at name pros also.
Thanks a lot Todd, I was doing that number crunching and to be honest at 5:30 a.m. and about 4hours working on the post, I stopped. I knew 4,5,6 would be important, thank you for your analysis it was helpful and interesting that 7 letters were so prevalent.
Hopefully this data will people to understand the brandable space a little better and have better luck selling wherever they sell.
great post . It helps when coming to hand reg “brandables” as we can like “such and such” but the market may say otherwise . Got to think with what the end user wants instead of what we like and the list can help narrow it down
How many of those names actually are “in-use” I wonder. . . I checked a few and I’d say the results weren’t surprising.
thanks for the good research
Thanks for the comment Adam, yeah that’s the next step I have been going through A, and checking for development.
todd, I think to really get an answer on the length question we need to have Raymond evaluate brandbucket’s current inventory. They probably don’t take alot of long names.
Also, In my experience they take zo’s much faster than ly’s for example. If 10 letter domain names are 1% of the listings then 8 sales might not be bad.
Great research Raymond. Would love to see a follow up post on this. It does indeed seems that the shorter the name the higher the percentage of sales is.
This is fantastic! great information on the sales, some of the names i wouldn’t have thought were that good. Goes to show the brandables are in the eyes of the buyer.
Thanks again!
Nice. I have many of the sale price information as I tracked their site sales for quite awhile, until their sales went anonymous. Now I track which domains get unlisted and do a little more research to find out if it was an actual sale.
Unbelievable article, thanks for the hard work you put in– if it helps to know it’s really appreciated!
I’m going to put this to use and I’ll remember you when it pays off 😉
Appreciate the comment Daniel, thank you.
