Should domain blogs publish full Whois info for a story

September 23, 2011 by Raymond Hackney

There seems to be a bit of a debate about a post that took place on DomainShane.com. In the post Chris Woodward spoke a little about Facebook and tm squatting.

I agreed with the post and think its foolish for anyone blatantly regging tm names. The second point being, you need to know who you are squatting. Not all companies go after their mark strongly. Facebook does. Some companies do buy names instead of going the UDRP route.

The post did not only contain the names, but the full whois info of the registrant.  Some found this tasteless and others said it was public anyway.

I had a few people within domaining bring it up in conversation today. Now when there is a sale there are many blogs, including this one, that mention the name of the buyer or seller.

Is posting what is fully available info a big deal, little deal or no deal in your opinion ?

I am not sure you need to publish everything. The name is all right, but the address and phone ? No

I understand how some would be upset so we pulled it. But there is a lesson in this. If you don’t want your information public don’t put it in the public information system. It’s not like we dug very deep. But we still pulled it because although they are squatters they are still human beings and I wouldn’t want any personal harm based on our publishing.
