Domain Investing Stats and Tips

If you don’t care, why do you spend so much time talking about it ?

July 19, 2011 by Raymond Hackney

By: Raymond Hackney

I have always found the domaining industry rather odd, its the only industry where people bad mouth the people who are supposedly helping their business.

Example 1

"All these new tlds suck they will only make .com stronger, my .com portfolio just went up in value, etc…"

If they suck and are going to help your portfolio, why get upset ?

Example 2

".com is king, everything else sucks, but I do spend three hours a day, debating with fools that are supposedly inferior to me and the .com nation."

Again, if you are kicking so much butt, how do you even have time to argue with a .co fanboy or someone who believes .xxx will be hot ?

Example 3

"I don't care about any of these other extensions, I don't care about Google using G.co or About.me"

You do care, stop saying you don't. You spend hours everyday posting on blogs and forums.

Human beings don't spend time on things they don't care about.  If you don't like something fine, but you do care.

When I started the .tv sub forum years ago on Namepros, I set the first rule, "For like minded individuals with an interest in the .tv extension." You don't like .tv great, this is not the place for you.  But you have people who claim they dislike and are uninterested come and spend hours debating.  The first thing I thought was, what kind of life do you have ? You spend hours on something you say you have no interest in.

The second point that would be obvious to a ten year old, if the others are fools and are helping your business, why point out their mistake ?

Now you will get the looking out for someone, TRANSLATED "I want to tell them that dot whatever sucks and they need to buy one of my .coms."

The bottom line is there are plenty of ways to make money, and no one knows it all.  I know people that have sold a .tel for a profit, many made money in .mobi at first, there are plenty making money with .tv and .me and .co.

And if they are all fools, why do you care, why does it upset you ? Sit back and make money off their mistakes. And if you really want to help people, I think there are much greater causes than domaining.

Great post, very honest and nice to hear someone speak the truth. Much better than someone like Berkens looking to profit from new tld and thinking the ICANN chairman going to work with the same company he did a deal with is not shady.

I thought this very same thing today. You have thedomains mention Google and G.co. This guy Brad who is always so concerned about .co getting attention has a fit. Its like why does he care so much. Is he looking to save us .co domainers. idiots

It’s about time someone said this. The blowhards and know-it-alls have driven domain blogs stale.
“Dot com is king’ over and over and over. We know. We KNOW!!! Shaddup already.
It’s not where all people make all the money. They are just transparent numbnuts protecting their own investments, and fear makes them so defensive. They are afraid to be wrong.
    Great post! Thank you!

That’s a fact, when people talk about something, either positively or negatively, they of course do care about it. That’s the case with .CO. You have a ton of people hating the extension but they daily feel the urge to spend a big portion of their time trying to knock it down, taking precious time away from their job and dot com portfolios.

It’s human nature to talk about things that you agree and disagree with. It’s called discussion and debate. Everyone is looking for reassurance in their investment. It’s why the discussion forums for stocks are so popular. Once you buy something you want to share with fellow investors why you’ve made a great investment and fight against all that oppose. I am on the side that you can make a BETTER investment in dot com that you can in the rest of the tlds. The risk/reward of the dot co and dot tv is too high for me and takes it from the semi-gambling scenario of domain investing to absolute gambling. Is it wrong for others to invest? Absolutely not. I’m sure I fit into the blow hard and know it all category but I am not naive or stupid as implied by bDomains. This post, like many of mine are written to drive discussion by writing about topics that drive controversy. And why did I waste my precious time to write this? Because I enjoy it and love to be part of great discussion.

@Shane your arguement has a lot of holes. Human nature is nothing to pride oneself in, a lot of human nature is terrible.
Stock forums are a joke, a bunch of shorts or longs trying to manipulate their story. very little real discussion.
A lot of the time in domains no one is looking for your opinion. Don’t flatter yourself, what you think of .co means nothing to me and probably anyone else.
If someone is asked for their take, that’s fine, but most of the time no one is asked. The author of this post is spot on.
Thank you for the article and telling it like it is, first time reader, will come back.

Nice article, thank you. I was taught speak when spoken to, and if you have nothing positive to contribute find another hobby.

I like these kind of posts that call out the douchebags. Much better than guess who bought this or another bore on which company wants which new tld. yawn
Discussion is one thing, but I have seen plenty of nonsense where a bunch of nobodies comment. Berkens at least I know he is successful, but the rest of the douchebag parade ? Show me some .com king sales, no NDA. Put up or shut up.
By the way loved the com vs co video. Great stuff

Wow thank you for all the comments and kind words people.
@shane,thanks for commenting I did not write to spark controversy, I have always felt this way and could not understand it and felt that it gets old. I don’t think its anything more than people just trying to bust people’s stones from behind a computer. In the past in the .tv forum some people did offer to have the discussion in person. Never any takers.
Stocks that is my background, like plants for you. I think someone like you will make an educated opinion and debate but most clowns on yahoo finance are just spamming and running their mouth with nothing to back up. I think a logical debate is fine. But when someone posts in the cctld section of Namepros about a .co they regged, I think they are looking to talk to like minded individuals about .co because they have a shared interest.
Now when you get the loons like the one on Berkens blog talking about .co overtaking .com then I understand the comments back.
But like someone else mentioned and I like Brad have done business with him on the wholesale side, but he does seem to post a lot about .co where he just seems upset its getting a post on thedomains. If .com is so great why waste your breath ?

I think some guys with thousands of .com portfolios afraid of .CO taking over .com and drop their .com values.
So, they put down .CO to make sure that their .com are still number one on top of the world.
Just like you work in an office where your colleagues talked behind your back or back-stepped you in order to get rid of you, and he gets your top job or promotion…
It is my common observation / opinion…
