Domain Investing Stats and Tips

Is now a chance for registrars to make in dent in the Go Daddy market share

April 2, 2011 by Raymond Hackney

Everyone by now knows of the video in which Bob Parsons hunts an elephant in Zimbabwe. The story has made mainstream news.  Along with everything going on PETA has transferred their domains from Go Daddy to Register.com (That was first reported by Andrew at www.domainnamewire.com)

Namecheap came out and sent this email to customers:

It’s not often that we would disagree publicly with a competitor, but we at Namecheap are very disturbed by this video of a competitor killing an elephant for sport.  Check out the ABC News Report (Warning: Very Graphic!)

We’ve decided to throw our support behind our Elephant friends by offering domain transfers at a price where we actually lose money.

Show your protest by saying BYEBYEGD again and transfer your domains to Namecheap for $4.99 for the next 24 hours through 11:59pm EST on 3/31/11 (limit 10 per user, valid for all com/net/org domains).

On top of that, we’ll donate $1 for each transfer to Save The Elephants at http://www.savetheelephants.org/

Use coupon code BYEBYEGD and let’s help the Elephants together!

Regards,
Team Namecheap

*They did extend for another day til 11:59pm 4/1/11
A nice gesture and also a way to get their name in the spotlight that Bob Parsons created.
This gesture is fine but should registrars look to accomplish more ? There are many domainers who own thousands of domains that have expressed their disdain for what has gone on with Parsons.
Its foolish to think everyone can transfer out overnight, and Namecheap did place a limit of 10.
But with all the domainers upset about this could other registrars offer a lower price and give domainers  90 days to get their domains out of Go Daddy ?
They could match Go Daddy price not the generous offer of $4.99, but maybe $7. If people are truly outraged they will move their domains, and if the other registrars care as much as they say they do, they will pick up a lot of domains. What do you think about this ?

I am not upset. Bob has some ball doing what he did. Whether to transfer your name to a different registry should be a business decision.

@poor uncle true it should be a business decision, I think social media though is impacting business decisions more and more.
