One of my favorite songs from The Kinks is Celluloid Heroes. The song is about Hollywood stars. Well in domaining a lot of stars are domain brokers. And if you pay attention it seems like everyone is a domain broker.
So I changed the lyrics a smidge:
Everybody’s a dreamer
And everybody’s a star
And everybody’s a broker
It doesn’t matter who you are
Some of the most outrageous stuff takes place when someone does a domains wanted thread on Namepros or posts on X.
One Namepros member stated he was looking to purchase some LL.com domain names.
They wrote:
I’m looking for LL.com domains and got the same domain offered 16 times on this forum… Out of this – 11 people admitted they are brokers, 5 didn’t admit they are brokers and playing that they are an owner. One actually looks like an owner and is even talking “as he is an owner and he accepts or declines the offer”.
This is ridiculius and time wasting. Brokers shall mention they are brokers, in a very first message.
Yes 16 different people representing the same name. Now are they really representing the name? Hmmm.
I have spoken a few times with Brent Oxley he mentioned he gets contacted by 40 different people representing the same name and at different prices. In one instance I know of a sale and I spoke to a broker who sent a name to Brent. He thought it sucked that Brent bought the name from someone else when he was sure he showed it to him first.
Brent pointed out that first does not mean anything. It’s the price. If you send example.com to Brent for $200K and he does not reply or sends back pass and then you see it sold, I might have showed it to Brent for $50K or that’s what he negotiated down to. So the first broker did not get screwed.
On Namepros there are all these domains wanted threads started and it’s all geared to getting a look to go to Brent. There are probably 100 people in the domaining world where their sole existence in the business is to show a big budget, they don’t have the money.
So It’s like someone who really buys on Namepros like Brad Mugford, says wow Budget $200K to $500K ok Brad.com $300K. They then email Brent Oxley and say Brad.com $300K you interested? He replies no or counters and they come back to you with his counter. Maybe Jackpot Brent wants to buy for $300K. This goes on all the time.
Trader rating is important on Namepros and when you see people who supposedly have big budgets, you would think they bought something over the years. But the trader rating is 0.
So if you haven’t done it already, add domain broker to your LinkedIn profile.
