I get a lot of lists sent to me from people looking to sell domain names. Some of these lists will note that the sender plans on letting names expire but they are asking me if I want to pay $30,000?
First off 99 out of 100 times the names are nowhere near worth what the seller is asking for, especially from a domain investor. But I go over all the lists because I have a decent number of clients and friends who look for names to buy.
So yesterday a friend sent me an email letting me know they hand registered a domain name that was on a list a few months back. When I went over the list initially, I reached out to him because some of the names on this list were in a niche where he owns several domain names.
Now the email from the seller stated specifically they were going to drop the names, but were offering me any name for $30,000 before he dropped them.
Why say you are going to let the names drop and ask for $30,000? I mean just ask for $30,000 don’t show weakness by saying you are going to drop them.
So I figure well maybe my one friend might be interested in making some kind of offer since they are going to drop. At least get something the names were expiring in 3 weeks.
So he tells me he will pay $200 for one of the names, I email the seller, he replies, too low but thanks anyway.
My friend saved $192 and hand registered it yesterday. I have no understanding why you don’t just take $200 as a win instead of getting nothing. I know some might say well not worth the time, to push, etc… That might be ok for a Rick or Frank to say but not someone who is treading water in the business. This seller has emailed me many times and the names for the most part are mediocre to bad, he is just pricing names too high in my opinion.
But look people can price things whatever they like, but don’t tell people you are going to let the domain name expire and ask 5 figures. Something that makes sense if you want to take this path is to be asking $100 to $500 where you can say you think these names will go for that range at GoDaddy auctions, so avoid the bidding war. Personally I don’t think you ever let people know you are going to let expire.
Was the name so bad the registrar didn’t put it on auction when it expired?
I think all the names from the list were at GoDaddy William, so it went to auction and no one bid. Then the name went to the drop.
Thanks for sharing and that’s interesting to know. Such people exists and I wonder what’s going on in their minds!
Last week I won a couple of domains from expiring auctions and the seller whom I asked if he’s willing to sell those domains to me privately which he rejected the offers. Even when those domains were expired, I contacted him again to renew it which he didn’t. Now he’s asking if he can get one of the domains back!
And the prices he was asking was simply ridiculous and always talked arrogantly. In the end, it’s his loss and I grabbed some nice domains.
Oh yeah, I paid little more in auctions than what I offered him. So not unrealistic offers presented from my side.
Wow Abdul now he wants one back? That’s crazy after you had so much communication with him.
Yeah, it’s surprising to see he wants back with the same rude attitude and saying me that I’ll show him my better nature by selling him back! I mean I didn’t do anything wrong other than informing his domains are expiring so he should renew it which he didn’t.
