So the new NHL team in Las Vegas announced their name last Tuesday. Owner Bill Foley kept people in suspense for months, putting out disinformation and talking about other names he was never planning on using. I had a good idea what the name would be before the big reveal. Why ? Because I had just gotten an email from Sedo that I had sold a domain name. I thought about breaking the story but then I thought that it would be wrong to take the big moment away from Bill Foley and the Las Vegas team.
I was following this for months because I had been keeping track over NHL team names in .tv for awhile now.
There had been a buying spree with names like Ducks.tv selling for $15,000 and Flyers.tv selling for $10,000. I was pissed at myself as I had owned Bruins.tv for years but then let the registration slip. Legendary .tv investor Ben Van Dyk owned several hockey mascot names in .tv. They had all changed hands in private.
So I was trying to guess what the Las Vegas team there was a lot of talk about Knights being in the name. Bill Foley attended West Point and wanted Black Knights, but after tm concerns and not wanting to get into a potential dispute with the U.S. Army that was off the table.
I was hearing Desert Knights mentioned and then talks of Golden Knights, Silver Knights and Red Hawks.
I registered DesertKnights.tv and then on October 4, I registered GoldenKnights.tv.
So on November 21 when I got the email, we are pleased to tell you GoldenKnights.tv has sold, I knew what the name the Las Vegas franchise had chosen.
I priced the name with a buy it now and parked it at Sedo. It’s nice that continued attention to a niche paid off and I was glad to finally make a worthwhile .tv sale for the first time in years.
It turns out the U.S. Army has concerns about the GoldenKnights name.
